Skating has always been the most important of hockey skills and the most important determinant to advancement in the game. As a player you should always continue to focus on skating, after all, it is what we do best, just ask our graduates! Skating is King, it has always been King! At Huron, we have always known this. We use video analysis to instruct and evaluate each student. Seeing yourself perform the skating skills is the quickest way we know to help students understand for themselves what they must improve upon. The "new" game can no longer be played effectively without top end skating skills. This is true from Mites to the NHL. Learning to play defensive hockey is now predicated solely on skating ability, positioning, and legal stick checking techniques. At Huron we emphasize hockey sense, also referred to as game understanding. Combined with our fundamental puck skill instruction, our battery of game situation exercises and limited space games guarantees improvement. After all, puck control done only around cones, and passing done without resistance is not a realistic application to the game. Huron promotes a specialized curriculum for a specialized position. We teach the latest in body positioning fundamentals with emphasis on how the game is being played today. Richard Shulmistra, a former student who played at the NHL level, redesigned our goalie only program with the "new" game in mind. We provide net minders with position specific training using game situation practical application. It works.
